The Reina Sofia Museum focuses exclusively on twentieth century art, the jewel in the collection being Picasso's Guernica, a universally-recognised symbol of the Spanish civil war. In addition to Picasso, some of the greatest works of Salvador Dali, Joan Miro and Juan Gris are on display here. The appeal of the fine permanent collection is enhanced by constantly changing temporary exhibitions which are always in tune with latest trends of the avant-garde. The building, formerly the hospital of San Carlos, combines the eighteenth century stamp of the original architects Hermosilla and Sabatini with contemporary additions by Antonio Fernandez Alba and Jean Nouvel.
