The undisputed queen of the fauna in the Sierra Nevada must surely be the ibex (Capra pyrenaica), which often grazes on the high mountain pastures. Up to 80 endemic species have been identified and classified. In addition, there are a number of unique species of invertebrates including over 20 species of butterflies, as well as numerous species of small birds, and a large number of birds of prey.
