Year round, except winter because the predominant mountain climate produces wide temperature variations. In the colder months, snow covers much of the territory, and towns and villages are cut off.
Tips
In summer, there is a free service of guided tours of the national park from each of the four main access points. Public information points are also set up at these points.
There are a good number of shelters on the main trails where food and bunks are available.
In summer, access to the Covadonga Lakes is limited
The weather is liable to change unexpectedly, so you should carry maps, compass and be full-equipped with walking boots, cold-weather gear and waterproofs as well as food and water
Take binoculars for wildlife observation. Most animals are most easily seen first thing in the morning
Plan your hikes carefully, taking the appropriate equipment for each route
Check the weather forecasrt before setting out (Tel. 807 17 03 81. www.inm.es) and be prepared for sudden changes in conditions
