Bathed by the Cantabrian Sea, the north coast of Spain - La Costa Verde or green coast - offers some of the most beautiful and spectacular scenery. Gijon, with its old town, the San Lorenzo beach and the Cimadevila district, is the capital of the region, but from Castropol in west of Asturias, across to Ribadedeva, the coastal route reveals a plethora of attractive locations.
There are picturesque villages like Luarca - a traditional fishing port whose beautiful cemetery sits atop the cliffs - and Cudillero with its colourful houses perched on the mountainside; or Luanco and Candas on the other side of Cape Peñas and the small seafaring towns of Bustio and Lastres; long sandy beaches overlooked by rocky cliffs, such as Silencio or Baray, and towns with old quarters of particular appeal, such as Ribadesella and Llanes; there are natural beauty spots, geological and archaeological remains, and numerous examples of Spanish-American architecture.
