Solitary coves hidden among red cliffs and surrounded by pines; large, quiet coves with fine sand and clear deep water; natural parks, prehistoric paintings, rice fields, imposing fortifications built by Arabs and Templars; fishing villages and mountain towns; these are the treasures belonging to the coast of the province of Tarragona, in the extreme south of Catalonia.
The calm waters of the river Ebro, the biggest river on the Iberian peninsula, mark out this land made up of a variety of areas that, over the centuries has been home to all kinds of civilisations, each of which has left behind an important cultural and natural legacy, reflected now in the traditions, monuments, language, and also in the character of the people.
The coves of L'Ametlla and Perello, the old coastal roads, L'Ampolla, the unspoiled spaces of the Natural Park of the Ebro Delta, the mountains of Els Ports Natural Park, the prehistoric paintings that comprise the Rock Paintings of the Mediterranean Arc, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the sandy beaches of Amposta, Sant Jaume, Tortosa and Deltebre are recommended stops along a tour of this coastline whose main communication route is the AP-7.
