Around the cathedral, the ruas - a Galician word for street - and cobbled squares form a maze of nooks and corners filled with art and mystery. The arches and arcades create a welcoming and romantic image for this rainy city. Plaza de Quintana, with its ancient cemetery; Rua Vilar, with its arcaded pavements; Plaza de Cervantes, with its history of commerce and once the scene of Inquisition autos-da-fe; Rua Preguntoiro, with its nineteenth and early twentieth houses; Calle de Algalia de Abajo, one of the main routes around which the old Jewish quarter grew up; and Calle Franco, the most visited street in the city and the true soul of the old town; all these are places to wander around, exploring and enjoying the bars and restaurants with their typical local produce and cuisine.
