To reach the Cathedral of Santiago (in English, St James) on Sunday, July 25th, - the saint's day - is the best possible date, particularly for the devout who have walked the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail. A year when the saint's day falls on a Sunday is known as Año Santo Jacobeo, a Jacobean Holy Year; this occurs at 6, 5, 6 and 11 year intervals. The year 2010 is just such a year.
But, whenever you visit, you will find yourself in a mysterious and holy city. Year round, the city celebrates and demonstrates its devotion and pilgrimage, and, year round, it offers a wide range of art and cuisine. The mountains that surround the city focus the fog and cloud, resulting in a mild, wet climate with an average temperature of 12 degrees. In summer, of course, the temperatures are higher, but there is always a chance of rain in Galicia, whatever the season.
