Santiago is a university town and at night it comes alive with illuminated monuments and the streets are packed with bars and taverns. There are two distinct areas to go out at night, the old and the modern. The historic centre brims with traditional bars and taverns offering seafood and snacks. In the newer area, the Ensanche, the restaurants and bars are concentrated in the streets of Carreira do Conde, Montero Rios, Alfredo Brañas and Republica de El Salvador, as well as, further south, around the Plaza Roxa, Santiago del Estero, Nova de Abaixo and Santiago de Chile.
