Santiago de Compostela
Leisure & fiestas

Santiago de Compostela has a great program of festivities year round, with the highlight being the festival of St. James, on July 25th. This is a holiday throughout Spain, since James is the country's patron Saint, but it is in Santiago de Compostela where the celebrations are most important. Both in this as in other festivals, it is common to see the muiñeira - the traditional Galician dance - being danced accompanied by music on the bagpipes, and the local speciality, pulpo - octopus, will be served throughout the city, even from temporary street stalls. The city's other big festival, where the religious tradition and fervour of the area also comes to the fore, is the feast of the Ascension, in May, around which a busy cultural programme is arranged. The other typical Catholic holidays of Christmas and Easter are also celebrated.
