Church of San Jeronimo el Real

Ever since 1510, when King Fernando (Ferdinand the Catholic) held his early court at the monastery, the church of los Jeronimos has been linked to the most important religious events involving the Spanish monarchy. Here the Princes of Asturias swore their oaths and here, too, Alfonso XIII married Victoria Eugenia in 1906. The cloister, belonging to the old convent and destroyed by the Napoleonic army, is now incorporated into the Prado museum complex. The church, commissioned by the Catholic monarchs, was built in a transitional style between gothic and renaissance, although the towers are a nineteenth century addition, a part of the in-depth refurbishment ordered by Isabel II. Nearby stands the building of the Royal Spanish Academy, where the language academics hold their meetings.

Address: Moreto, 4.
Metro: Retiro, Atocha.
