San Francisco el Grande

Comparable in luxury and splendour to the Papal Basilica in Rome itself. The dome - ranked the fourth largest in the world - was added to the church of San Franciso the Great in the eighteenth century. At one time, the church was used as a pantheon of illustrious men, housing the graves of such greats as Garcilaso, Quevedo, Calderon de la Barca, and el Gran Capitan. The profuse decoration is one of the most important characteristics of the church, with important frescoes and paintings, including the magnificent painting of San Bernardino by Goya. Also worthy of note are the beautiful carved doors and the gothic choir stalls from the El Paular monastery in Rascafria. Adjacent to the church is the chapel of el Cristo de los Dolores.
