Worth visiting for its excellent collection of paintings which includes works by Ribera, Gregorio Fernandez and Lucas Jordan, Madrid's Royal Monastery of the Incarnation is also famous for its relics room; here, every year on July 27 a 'miracle' occurs when the preserved blood of St. Pantaleone liquefies for a period of 24 hours. The cloister, the entrance, the galleries of paintings and sculptures, and the Kings' Hall are some of the most noteworthy aspects of the building. The convent was founded in the seventeenth century by Margarita of Austria, wife of Felipe III, as an addition to the fortress which occupied the site of the current Royal Palace. Behind the monastery, in the Plaza de la Armada Española, is the Senate, located in a former Augustinian convent.
