In the eighteenth century, the decorative fountains of Cibeles and Neptune stood at either end of the Prado de Apolo, the first section of the elegant Salon del Prado, which extended to as far as the Plaza de Carlos V, and was a symbol of Madrid in the age of enlightenment. Cibeles (Cybele), was the Phrygian goddess of abundance and the Earth, and her statue has become one of the great symbols of the capital of Spain. Commissioned by Carlos II and designed by the great Madrid architect Ventura Rodriguez, it stands at the centre of a large roundabout flanked by the Palace of Communications (now home to the city council), Casa de America (Linares Palace), the Army Headquarters (Buenavista Palace) and the Bank of Spain.
