Cathedral of the Almudena

In the second half of the twentieth century, Fernando Chueca completed this classic cathedral, whose domes and spires are emblematic of the Madrid skyline. It is sited over the neo-gothic vault of the Marques de Cubas and the capitals are an unmistakable echo of the crypt, which was designed in 1879. The cathedral is dedicated to la Almudena, patron saint of Madrid. The great columns of the Armoury façade are particularly noteworthy and have witnessed the celebration of many liturgical masses through the years.
