Presided over by the statue of Don Alvaro de Bazan, the great admiral of King Felipe II, this square has traditionally been linked to municipal life. Here can be found the Lujanes Tower, where the French king, Francis I, was imprisoned. This is the oldest civic building in the capital, and one of the few examples of Mudejar art in Madrid. The Casa de Cisneros and the Casa de la Villa complete the square's architectural offering.
