Commissioned by Carlos III and built in 1778, the Puerta de Alcala has become a symbol of Madrid, its wide open arches like a welcoming a gateway into the city. It stands on the site where Felipe III had previously ordered a triumphal arch to commemorate the entry into the city of his wife, Margarita of Austria. The current monument was designed by Francisco Sabatini, and includes sculptures by the same artists as the Cibeles fountain. These two monuments on the calle de Alcala combine to provide one of the most impressive images of the Madrid night. The arch also serves to commemorate the popular image of Carlos III as "the best mayor of Madrid."
Address: Plaza de la Independencia.
