The magnificent Palace of Catalan Music was built by modernist architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner between 1905 and 1908 as headquarters of the Orfeo Catala. For years, it has been a landmark of musical activity throughout the world. Today, its rooms and halls host concerts of all genres and styles, cultural, social and commercial events, business conventions, conferences and exhibitions. The façade is decorated with sculptures alluding to the world of music; inside, the architect has masterfully combined trencadis (the pottery fragments characteristic of Catalan architecture) and glass. The pipes of the organ tower above the rear of the stage, themselves becoming yet another decorative element. In 1987 UNESCO declared the Palace a World Heritage monument.
