This, the oldest monastery in the city, was originally established by King Alfonso VI in 1085, the year of the recapture of Toledo by the Christians. It is closely linked to the figure of El Greco, housing, as it does, the crypt that the artist bought to be his family burial place. It has three original works by the Cretan artist, the first he painted after his arrival in Toledo: San Juan Bautista, (St John the Baptist); San Juan Evangelista (St John the Evangelist); and Resurreccion ante San Ildefonso (the Resurrection before San Ildefonso). El Greco also designed the altarpieces for the monastery church. The chapter house, with its lavish tile-work, the Gothic tomb of Juan Alfonso de Ajofrin and the museum installed in the choir and ante-choir are other attractions of the monument. The convent also sells sweets and pastries made by the nuns according to traditional recipes.
