Getting around

The city is located high on a bluff overlooking the Tajo river, this precipitous position makes comfortable footwear a must when visiting the city. Without doubt, the best approach to visiting Toledo is simply to stroll around the labyrinthine streets and allow your instinct and intuition to guide you. Although the city is surrounded by car parks (including la Puerta de Alfonso VI, St. Ursula and the corralillo de San Miguel, near to the Alcazar) the access limitations of the historical centre make the use of a car inadvisable. The tourist train Zocotren offers a complete tour of the city and its surroundings, including the panoramic view from the cigarrales - the old country villas on the river bank. In addition to customised guided tours, a number of companies have imaginative suggestions for visits to the city which tie in with different facets of its character. In the summer, the nocturnal visits are one of the most stunning ways to see the city.
