With its fantastic legacy of the "three cultures" - Muslim, Jewish and Christian, Toledo's Casco Viejo - the old town - is a veritable open-air museum. The wealth of monuments has merited its declaration as a World Heritage Site. The basic trail runs from the cathedral to the church of Santo Tome - where El Greco's masterpiece The Burial of Count Orgaz is to be found - by way of the El Transito and Santa Maria la Blanca synagogues in the old Jewish quarter, and the Gothic monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. In the area where the Santo Domingo Real and Santo Domingo el Antiguo convents are found, there are also the fascinating "cobertizos" - narrow passageways and covered alleys that slip between the buildings, echoing with the city's romantic history.
